I’m A Fire Starter!
Well! I never thought I’d be buying solid fuel in my life especially as I’ve spent the last 25 years with the luxury of central heating. Selling my 3 bed semi with all it’s mod cons for a life on a Narrow Boat is in stark contrast to living in a house and so far I’m loving it.
Up early to start a fire that will, in a short time, melt the ice that accumulated on the inside of the windows over night. Crisp and bright Winter mornings are absolutely fantastic and something that I remember well from my childhood.
I was excited today at a purchasing bargain at my local B&Q. 3-for-2 on their bags of logs
The fire-starting duties are never ending mind! Once you have the fire lit you have to constantly seduce it offering coal and logs and giving it a good old stoke throughout the day and evening.
One of our gadgets work well. Opening the door to the stove sees smoke uncoil to the ceiling creeping along until it hits the smoke alarm. Shrieking like a stuck pig it emanates its life-saving siren that sees me reach for a neighbouring lambskin cushion to dissipate the smoke which in turn quietens the alarm to slumber until the next time. :D
The stand-pipes have been turned off in the Marina due to the big freeze; burst pipes are a nightmare so it’s quite understandable. Just means we’ll have to be frugal with our water supply until they’re turned back on and I can re-fill the tank.
A hearty Shepard’s Pie for tea today I think…. warm us up from the inside out!

Just to note here you can buy a cubic metre (about a ton) of logs for about 50-80 quid delivered, which works out way cheaper than B&Q. There’s some people in the Bath Farmers market selling them.
Check the chimeny doesn’t need sweeping if the fire smokes with the doors open
Our pipes are frozen here too (I mean water pipes) 8O
While you were at B&Q you should’ve thrown some of that “secondary double glazing” stuff in yer trolley to stop the window probs, I’ll never stop naggin ya about this till ya do it hun LOL
PS: Just noticed —————————————————————->

Me and wifey sold our house to live in a 17ft touring caravan in tewksbury< it was march 03, we had the same problem with the snow and ice….everythin froze! even the gas!! we never looked back, and enjoyed every minute of it…..then we had to go back to bricks n mortar to lookafter wifes mom , moms gone now, but it was the best 4yrs of our lives…..cant get her on the water though!! good luck and happy new year! keep bloggin xxx
Its great to hear you are wallowing in the sheer joy of being on your boat! Not that I had any doubt that you would. The stoves are great, I love mine, even after the mess and dust they create, I would never be without it. They pay you back in kind, keeping you toasty all winter!
Keep on wallowing, and keeping warm.
Debbie. :D
Thanks for all the lovely comments, advice and support. It’s very much appreciated!
I’ll shove Lottie up on the roof to give the chimney a brush
As for the log delivery, is there a number I can call?
There’s a notice pinned up on the board in the lock inn advertising logs…
Thanks Tom :)
